Cozy or Casual?

Hi Guys!

Its been a busy week. Getting back into the groove of things has not been easy but its definitely been interesting and exciting.

This week I had the pleasure of discussing possible kitchen layouts with a few special clients whose needs were completely different!

I get asked a lot of times by clients looking to work on their kitchens on the best ways to maximize space for eating areas so they can gain more cabinetry.

Here is my advice, IT’S ALL PERSONAL!

Every family has a different dynamic and lifestyle. Some families only eat in their dining rooms for formal occasions, some eat in the dining room every single night. Some families like to have quick bites at the breakfast bar, while others want to sit down at a table and enjoy a long meal. Some families are large and must be able to seat 6-8 at a dinette table, while others only care to have 2-3 kids sit at the island. And some families don’t cook often and would rather space for seating, while others cook up a storm on a daily and need to find a better strategy.

There is no general rule that all kitchens must follow. When designing a home you are always working out ways that the physical house can be functional and practical for that unique family’s needs.

And so, when a family that must hands down have a dinette area in the kitchen ask what they can do to maximize space, I suggest a breakfast nook!

The amount of space a banquette can save is so worth it! In order to sit comfortably at a table, you need to leave anywhere from 32”-42” behind the chair…ON ALL SIDES. If the people in the family are larger, its wise to leave more room for added comfort.

Now get this, if you simply incorporate a banquette design, you avoid those extra feet on a minimum of 1-3 sides! And lets face it, nooks are way cozier to eat your pancakes at than a standard chair. I know I always head for the booths when I dine out.

Banquettes are a great way to bring an extra element of design into the kitchen, while adding an entirely new level of warmth to your cooking scene.

Happy eating!!
